There are many forms of marketing, many of them are silly, some don't generate revenue, lots of them are either untrackable or just untracked. Oddly so, some of them are not even attempting to sell something but rather generate brand awareness. Direct marketing has 1 purpose - bring in revenue - coupled with tracking, so you know where it came from, how effective it was, and how to tweak it so you can get more. I have spent enough time and money on the other silly kinds of marketing to know they can starve a business. I am now at a time in my life where I want to learn how to make my next venture a successful one, I don't need to bang my head against the wall so much. My current plan on becoming an expert includes,
- reading books on Direct Marketing, 20 sounds like a good number to start with
- subscribing to newsletters on the subject
- studding direct marketing pieces
- crafting my own direct marketing pieces
- sell my services to small business
I have given myself a year for this goal, I don't know if that is enough so I will have to be flexible on that point. This is a somewhat difficult goal to quantify, much of it will be subjective and graded by me. One thing that will be concrete is when I do some work for someone else we will be able to determine if my direct marketing was successful.
